It is a city in the district of Parbhani in Maharashtra. It is the headquarters of the Gangakhed Taluk. However, the city is administered by a Municipal Council.

A brief history of Gangakhed
The city has historical significance and it is situated on the banks of River Godawari. Shree Sant Janabai was born here in this city.
Geography of Gangakhed
Gangakhed is situated at 18.95o N 76.75o E and it has an elevation of 390 m (1280 ft). The city is situated on the banks of Godawari River. It is 39 Kms to the south of Parbhani, the district headquarters.
Climate of Gangakhed
The city experiences tropical climate. During summer, it rains heavier than during winter. Koppen and Geiger have classified the climate of the city as Aw. The annual average temperature of the city is 27.1oC and annual average rainfall is 869 mm. May registers the highest temperature and December, the lowest temperature.

The city is governed by a Municipal Council and is divided into 23 wards. The elections for these 23 wards are held once in five years. The municipal council takes care of the provision of all the basic amenities to the residents of the city. It also imposes taxes and collects the same.

Sant Janabai Temple
Shree Sant Janabai who was born here also has a temple here which is situated on the riverbank of Godawari. This place is otherwise called as Kashi of the south or Dakshin Kashi. This temple also has the Samadhi of the saint.
Shree Balaji Temple
This is the only temple in the world which is similar to that of Tirupati Balaji Temple and has the idols of both Govinda as well as Balaji under one roof. Navrathri festival is celebrated in a grand manner during which “Rath Yatra” is also celebrated.
Chintamani Mandir
This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is 100 m away from the Balaji Temple. This temple is situated on the banks of River Godawari and the pilgrims can have an excellent view of the entire River. Chathurthi as well as other poojas are celebrated here.
Apart from the above, the city also has temples for Bomblya Mahadev and Narasimha Mandir which are also situated on the banks of River.
